Choose FREEDOM From Overdraft Fees!

You have a choice to bank where overdraft fees are completely optional... And even customizable.

When you shopped around, comparing different banks, and decided which one was best for setting up a checking account, you chose the one with the benefits and services you preferred. Even after you chose your preferred bank and the perks they offered, you still had to take the goods along with the not so good but unfortunately a standard aspect of traditional banking, i.e., overdraft fees. Sometimes it's out of your control or sometimes it's kind of your fault in the case spending more than you have in your account causing your balance to dip below $0. Most times at most banks, it would cost you dearly -- $35 per transaction, no matter how big or small the amount charged. These kinds of penalty fees can be a big detriment to your finances and even incur other fees like maintenance fees if your balance ever drops below the minimum amount, not to mention the eventual negative mark on your creditworthiness. However, Capital One 360 Checking is  not one of those banks with an overdraft policy that's like financial quick sand in hard times.

Capital One 360 now has four options you can you choose from in case you overdraw your 360 Checking account, or to prevent overdrafts altogether. Those options are Auto-Decline, Free Savings Transfer, Next Day Grace, and Overdraft Line of Credit:

Auto-Decline

This option is always in effect by default for all newly opened 360 Checking accounts unless you opt for another overdraft protection option. If you stick with Auto-Decline, all debit card transactions that would put your account in overdraft will be simply declined. However, pre-authorized transactions like gas station purchases may still overdraw your account, but you won't be charged any fees if that should happen

Free Savings Transfer

Unlike Auto-Decline, you have to opt in to enroll in this service and there is no cost to use it; you just have to set up a 360 Savings account or have a qualifying money market account to enroll. With this option, available funds are automatically transferred from your savings account to cover transactions that would take the available balance in your checking account below $0.00. Free Savings Transfer does come with some limitations:

  • You're only allowed to link just one savings or money market account as overdraft protection, and the ownership of this account must match the ownership of the linked 360 Checking account.
  •  If the available balance in your savings or money market account isn't enough to cover the whole overdraft amount, no transfer of funds would occur, and the transaction will eithier be (a.) returned as unpaid and you would be charged a Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) fee when applicable, or (b.) just have a negative balance on your account without any penalty
  •  Because savings and money market account transfers are limited to six (6) transfers per month, Free Savings Transfers also count with this monthly limit. If that limit is reached before the end of the month, overdraft transfers won't be processed and your transaction might be declined

Next Day Grace

If you opt for this service, Capital One would actually consider covering your overdrafted amounts and give you until the next business day to bring your balance back up. But if you fail to bring up your balance by the next day, you will be charged an overdraft fee of $35; overdrafts of $5 or less or transactions of $5 or less that overdraw your account won't be charged a fee. With this option Capital One is basically giving you the benefit of the doubt if you were to accidentally overdraw your 360 Checking account. There are two tier of  Next Day Grace coverage:
  • Next Day Grace STANDARD: Capital One will consider covering  your check, electronic payment (ACH), and recurring debit card transactions  if your available balance isn't enough to cover them
  • Next Day Grace PLUS: Capital One would consider covering not only check, electronic payments, and recurring debit card transactions but also ATM withdrawals and non-recurring debit card transactions if your available checking account balance isn't enough to cover them
Capital One offers this option as a discretionary courtesy service, so it's not guaranteed that they would cover  your spending every time you overdraw your checking account. This one is a bit of a risky option, so choose wisely when considering this.

Overdraft Line of Credit

Enrollment in this service gives you a small unsecured revolving line of credit to cover your overdrafts, but with much, much lower fees. If you overdraw your account, Overdraft Line of Credit (OLOC) covers the difference. And instead of being charged a hefty overdraft fee, you just pay a small amount of interest on the amount borrowed for the amount of time it takes to pay it back (literally a tiny fraction of what other banks charge in fees). Here's what OLOC also entails:
  • Maximum coverage amount up to $1000 (depending on credit limit you're approved for)
  • You can make a minimum payment by the last day of each month
  • Enrollment requires you to apply and be approved via credit check which might affect your credit score
  • Like any credit card or other line of credit, you won't be able to cover overdrafts in excess of your given credit limit

NOTE: If you still prefer to use paper checks, you will incur a $9 non-sufficient fund fee for all checks that bounce, regardless of which overdraft coverage you choose including Auto-Decline.

Capital One 360 is a bank that actually gives you a leg up in managing your money, and now has better options to help keep you from falling into the black hole that is overdraft fees. Their 360 Checking accounts also offer some fairly awesome perks, too such as:

A Quick Deposit of Loose Cash to a Mobile Bank Account...? Yes, It Is Possible!

All online banks provide customers options for depositing money, i.e electronic fund transfers, uploading an image of the check via an app, as well as mailing a check to the bank to be credited to their accounts. But what if you only had cash that you want to deposit to your online account? And by cash, I mean actual paper currency and loose change that you might have gotten from selling something on Craigslist or from a temporary working gig where you were paid in cash only. Suppose you didn't have a traditional brick-and-mortar bank account where you could deposit the cash at a local branch and later make an electronic transfer online? This is where Bluebird by American Express makes it possible to deposit loose cash to an online bank account.

I have Bluebird by American Express which is a prepaid card that charges no monthly fees or purchase fees and is usable at any business that accepts AmEx cards. I use it sometimes to make quick cash deposits to my Capital One 360 Checking account. It's  totally free to apply for and requires no credit inquiry of any kind. Plus you can reload it with cash, debit card, or checks at any Walmart, Walmart Supercenter or Walmart Neighborhood Market. It basically eliminates the need for a traditional bank account and dealing with bank tellers.

These are the steps I took:
  1. Applied for a Bluebird Card: You can buy a Bluebird setup kit which contain temporary cards at any Walmart store for $5, but you can also apply for a card online like I did at www.bluebird.com at no cost to you. All that's required to qualify is that you're at least 18 years of age, a U.S. citizen, and able to provide needed documentation that verifies your identity. It's a simple process that doesn't require any credit inquiry and all you have to do is meet the qualifications and you'll get your official Bluebird Card in the mail. After you receive your official card, activate it online and set up your account at the Bluebird site. Then you'll be all set to use it for loading cash, purchases and transfers.
  2. Loaded my cash to Bluebird at any participating Free Cash Reload network location  : You can do this at all Walmart locations by loading at the Customer Service desk, Walmart Money Center (only at Walmart Supercenters) or when checking out with a cashier. You'll get a receipt for the load transaction and then whatever amount of cash you load onto your card will be available in your Bluebird account immediately.
  3. Made an electronic transfer from my Bluebird account: After you load the cash to the card, you'll have to log in online to your Bluebird account
on a computer or with Bluebird's free mobile app and set up an external account, i.e., the mobile bank account you will make electronic transfers to. Then, once your bank account information is verified, you will be able to electronically transfer the cash you loaded to Bluebird to your online bank account by clicking on the Withdraw option and putting in the amount you want to send to your bank account.
  4. Checked my 360 Checking account: Bluebird electronic transfers take 1-2 business days to  appear in your bank account and are completely FDIC-insured.

It's a really simple process only without the hassles or transfer fees associated with a traditional bank account. Plus 7 most Walmart stores are open 24 hours, so you deposit cash inside the store in the wee hours of the morning, late at night, or pretty much anytime that's convenient for you which you can never do at a regular bank branch - at least without risking your safety at their ATM's.

All you have to do is apply online to get a Bluebird Card free of charge and give yourself an extra option of adding funds to your online account. However, if you happen to not have a mobile bank account or you're looking to set one up, I'd recommend Capital One 360 Checking. I've had an account with them for over a year now and like Bluebird, it is free and charges no monthly fees, is FDIC-insured, and much more.

You can also load cash at these other participating stores:

  • CVS/pharmacy
  • Walgreen's (and participating Duane Reade stores)
  • Family Dollar®
  • Rite Aid
  • participating 7‑ELEVEN®locations

Capital One 360: An Alternative Option From a Major Bank!

If you're familiar with how traditional brick-and-mortar banks work, then you're probably more than familiar with the long lines, the teller pushing services on you that you're not interested in every time you're just trying to quickly cash a check, and then there's the fees... Those monthly service fees charged because your account balance has fallen below a certain amount or your not getting Direct Deposit due to being jobless, the foreign transaction fees charged if you use your debit card abroad, and those ungodly overdraft fees of $35 - for each transaction overdrawing your account. But there is an alternative, a number of independent online alternatives to the traditional banks that are vying for your business. When you get into comparing these online banks, you wonder which would be best for your needs

Capital One, however, is a well-known major brick-and-mortar bank like Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Chase, etc. that offers much of the same services mentioned for better or for worse, but this bank offers a great alternative to conventional banking. Capital One's 360 Checking option is a mobile and online banking option that charges no monthly service fees nor requires a minimum balance or any recurring deposits to keep an account with them, which like most other online banks, but there's a number of great features of 360 Checking that puts this above the other online banks.

The Benefits of Capital One 360 Checking At a Glance

It's very simple to set up a 360 Checking account. To qualify, you must be 18 or older, a U.S. citizen or permanent resident with a social security number, and have a decent credit history.
Other than that Capital One 360 Checking provides you with:

  • No monthly service fees and no minimum balance required to open or keep your account.
  • Monthly interest earned on your account balance - currently 0.20% APY.
  • Access to over 38,000 fee-free Allpoint® ATM Machines and 2,000 Capital One® ATM's located nationwide
  • Free MasterCard® Debit Card with embedded microchip technology for purchases, an online security button to turn your card on or off, plus text and email alert options
  • FDIC-insured transactions including purchases, mobile check deposits with CheckMate app or via computer, external transfers, automatic bill payments, and more
  • One free checkbook

Person2Person Payments

With this feature, you can easily send money to anyone with a valid bank account free of charge, similar to  how PayPal works. Simply log in to your 360 Checking account, enter the recipients name, their email address and the last 4 digits of their bank account number. Then once the recipient verifies in the verification email sent to them from Capital One, the money will be transferred to them. If you send money to another Capital One customer they'll receive their funds instantly, otherwise it takes up to 2 business days for non account holders to receive money you sent to them.

BillPay

Capital One 360 Checking offers this bill payment service where you can electronically send payments for utility, credit card, and other expenses for participating merchants. You can also set up eBills to receive electronic bills and keep track of bill reminders and your BillPay transaction history.

Fee-Free Foreign Purchase Transactions

A great perk of 360 Checking is that you won't have to worry about any purchase fees if you travel abroad. Now that Capital One has implemented the new embedded chip technology onto their MasterCard Debit Cards, you can use your card for purchases in any foreign country for no extra charge. All you do is sign into your account online, click the "Debit Card" tab, fill out the form in the "Travel Plans" section, and enjoy your trip!

Mobile Check Deposits and the CheckMate App

Capital One 360' free CheckMate App
Anyone taking a leap into online banking might have concerns about foregoing access to a live teller for check deposits, but 360 Checking offer 3 convenient options to fund your account with paper checks. One way is through their smartphone app called CheckMate where you can snap a picture of both sides of a check with your phone and upload them to your account. If you don't have a smartphone or don't have immediate access to your phone, you can upload scanned pics of your check from a computer by simply logging into your account online and following the same steps as with the CheckMate app. You can also deposit checks and loose cash at any select Capital One branch ATM.

Optional Overdraft Protection Options

Capital One has one of the most lenient overdraft policies out of all the major banks, but the absolute best thing about it is that 360 Checking does not charge any overdraft fees... That is if you opt to not add overdraft protection when you set up an account, otherwise you're just limited to spending only what's in your account balance - and any transaction made with insufficient fund in your account is automatically declined.

Though if you do elect to add overdraft protection, Capital One has 2 options to choose from:
  • Auto-Decline: This is the option that is already in place when you sign up for an account. Here, any transaction you make that would cause your checking account to drop below $0.00 will be automatically declined and you're only limited to spending what's in your account
  • Overdraft Line of Credit: This option works as instead of being charged a flat costly overdraft fee, you only pay the small daily periodic interest (0.0315% at the current APR of 11.50%) on just the amount overdrawn up to the credit limit you're offered. You would pay this off just by making a deposit by the end of the month when the accrued interest is automatically deducted from your account (you can also pay it off earlier so you can pay less interest). For example, say you have $100 in your checking account with a $50 Overdraft Line of Credit Limit and you overdraw by spending $150 for a purchase; you'll only pay the interest for the $50 overdrawn. Then if you were to go 30 days before paying it off, only $0.48 is what you would be charged in accrued interest. This option is only processed when your account balance dips below $0.00 up to your given limit. Keep in mind that if you make or authorize any transaction(s) that would exceed your given credit limit, the transaction will be declined.
  • 360 Checking's Overdraft Line of Credit calculator.
  • Free Savings Transfer: This type of overdraft protection has no fees, requires no credit check of any kind but would require you to set up a free 360 Savings account. Therefore if you were to ever overdraw your 360 Checking account by any amount, funds would come directly from your 360 Savings to cover the overdrawn amount as long as you have enough in your savings balance to cover that amount.
  • Next Day Grace: With this option, Capital One will actually consider covering your overdraft at their discretion, that is if you're able to bring your balance back up by the next day. This option offers two tiers of Next Day coverage, such as the Next Day Standard that covers checks, electronic payments (ACH) and recurring debit card transactions. The other option, Next Day Plus, covers checks, electronic payments, recurring debit card transactions, ATM withdrawals, and non-recurring debit card transactions that may cause you to overdraw. Which ever Next Day option you choose, you have a full day to bring your account balance back up, however if you're not able to take care of the overdrawn amount  by the next day, you will be charged the standard $35 overdraft fee

All of these options are completely optional and you can easily opt out of each of them at any time.

It's important to note that Capital One does do a soft credit inquiry (where your credit score isn't affected) on all applicants who apply for 360 Checking minus overdraft protection. However,  if you elect to have the Overdraft Line of Credit during the application process, Capital One will do a hard pull on your credit that could affect your credit score and possibly your chances of approval for a 360 Checking account. So if you do intend on having overdraft protection, particularly the Line of Credit option, it is recommended that you apply for this option after you've been approved for an account. That way if you have anything in your credit history that may seem troublesome to most financial institutions, chances are it probably won't show up when Capital One does a soft pull of your credit and you could avoid getting declined for 360 Checking.

Refer a Friend Program

Last but not least, Capital One 360 has a referral program where  you can refer friends, family, coworkers, or any acquaintances to sign on as new customers for a 360 Checking and/or 360 Savings account and earn $20 for each person who sets up an account.

Plus Capital One 360 offers a $25 New Customer Bonus to select customers who are approved for an account, makes an initial deposit  of $250 or more, and makes any combination of 3 debit card purchases or Person2Person transactions within 45 days of opening their account.

The Perfect Option If You Crave Convenience With No Hassles

Out of all the options available online for mobile banking, Capital One 360 Checking is probably the best alternative to the traditional banks in offering nothing but convenience in providing no-cost access to your own money (through their large network of fee-free ATM's nationwide), simple options to electronically deposit funds, free bank and Person2Person money transfers, BillPay, and best of all no crippling overdraft fees - basically all of these great benefits from an established, trustworthy banking institution that's still a leader in the industry.
